The island of Rhodes is in South East Greece. It is the largest island in the Dodecanese. Rhodes has the Aegean Sea on its West and the Mediterranean Sea on its East. The island of Rhodes is oblong and has the shape of a spear edge. Located about 460 kilometers southeast of Athens, 380 km west of Cyprus and 18 km southwest of Turkey. Its length is 77 km, width 37 km and total area of 1,401 square kilometers (1,408,749 acres). It has 253 kilometers of coastline. The island can be described as mountainous. The population according to the latest census amounts to 125.113 inhabitants. The official currency is the Euro. Standard Time: UTC / GMT +2 hours, Summer Time: UTC / GMT +3 hours.
Esperides Rentals, located in Faliraki, is situated on the northeast coast of Rhodes. Rhodes town 12 km North. Lindos 38 km South East. Kattavia village 72 km South. Airport 17 km West Coast. Monolithos village 70-75 km South West Coast. Whichever direction you drive, you have the Sea to one hand and the Mountains to the other.
Rhodes island is well supported by Google Maps, Apple Ways and other such mobile phone applications. In some areas there is bad radio or mobile phone signal reception, due to mountains. It is advised to plan and download your route beforehand.
Driving in Rhodes, Greece is done on the right-hand side of the road. The priority-to-the-right rule applies. Greece uses the metric system for all road signs, so speed limits and other signs including distance are shown in kilometres and metres. There are no tolls to pay. The primary roads are well-maintained and surfaced with tarmac. However, the quality of many secondary roads is less consistent, with some featuring poorly maintained surfaces and lacking proper road markings or signage. During the April / May or October, after a few drops of rain, the roads could be slippery, due to dust, plantation pollen and vehicle oils. In the summer, due to the heat, the asphalt could be soft. Drive cautiously, take your time, and maintain a safe distance. When riding a motorbike, be sure to wear sunglasses or other protective eyewear to shield yourself from the numerous insects in the area. Please note that most roads lack protective barriers. There are some steep uphill and downhill roads. The 10% sign means that for every 100 meters distance driven, the height increases or decreases by 10 meters. The roads through the mountains are narrow and have many curves. Flocks of animals or individual animals often traverse the roads and can be challenging to spot at night, especially on winding mountain roads with blind curves.
Many drivers, particularly in rural areas, tend to disregard traffic signs and priority rules. It's common for some drivers to fail to signal when changing direction, while others may brake suddenly. Impatient drivers sometimes honk at traffic lights, and overtaking maneuvers, especially by scooters or taxis, are frequent.
In rural areas, elderly drivers or young agricultural workers often use pick-up trucks to transport fruits and vegetables. Additionally, certain individuals use pick-up trucks to haul scrap or carpets. These vehicles may be in poor condition, lack safety features, and operate without proper signaling lights or brakes. Whenever possible, give them priority and maintain a safe distance.
Be mindful of pedestrians, scooters, quads, goats, and deer, as they may also share the roads. Furthermore, many areas have "No Photo" signs—please respect these, as failure to comply could result in fines or arrest.
